Who Can Take the EGSA Certification Exam?
Applicants who want to earn EGSA certification must complete a two or four-year college degree program or be hired as a new apprentice-level technician by a company that is licensed to provide service on EGSA certified equipment. In many cases, EGSA certification exams are offered as part of the curriculum or requirements for completion of the apprenticeship. Similarly, technicians in the military can take the exam as part of their service.
What Does It Take to Become a Journeyman?
Journeyman certification requires completion of at least three years of experience as an electrical power generation equipment tech. Individuals who wish to pursue EGSA certification as a journeyman must demonstrate extensive knowledge of power generation principles. Individuals need a solid understanding of all mechanical and electrical components, how these interact and relate to one another, and a detailed knowledge of the service, maintenance, and repair of gensets.
How Do You Prepare for the Test?
EGSA certification is not something you study for overnight. It takes many months of dedicated study to pass the exam. Study guides and reference books are excellent tools that can help you prepare for the exam. Further, apprenticeships give you hands-on experience and direct access to EGSA certified technicians who can help you master the principles you need to pass the exam.
Where Can You Take the Test?
You need to schedule a proctor to administer the test through Ferris State University. Once scheduled, the proctor will meet you at the appointed time and date at a testing center located near your home or place of work. This makes it easy for you to take the exam without having to travel to a testing center across the state. When you take the test, remember you can use a calculator, but you can’t use a cell phone, laptop, or other electronic devices. To pass, you must earn a minimum score of 68% for apprentice-level certification, and 80% for journeymen level EGSA certification. Once you pass, you’ll earn the privilege of displaying your EGSA credentials.
