Regular Testing Ensures Generator Safety

At Gen-Tech Power Generation Specialists, generator safety is our top priority. We know that the safe operation of your generator systems is critical for your business. Our goal is to ensure that your systems meet and exceed all regulatory requirements for NFPA and other governing bodies so that your systems are safe and reliable. Thorough testing of your systems is more than a hedge against operational failure; it’s proof that your systems are safe and sound.

Weekly Inspections

Federal certification and most state licensure requirements require operators to perform weekly inspections of their emergency generators. At a bare minimum, this requires testing fuel supply levels, float switches, piping, and fuel pressure.

Weekly inspections should also include checks of the following systems:

  • Lubricating System
  • Coolant System
  • Exhaust System
  • Battery & Electrical System

It is also advisable to ensure that there are no foreign objects, damaged fittings, or debris near the generator that can cause damage or present a fire hazard.

Monthly Inspections

Most clients choose to perform their monthly inspection either during the first or last weekly test of the month. This streamlines the process and eases the burden of inspections. If you have a diesel generator, you should exercise the system for a minimum of 30 minutes. You will want to load the generator in compliance with NFPA 110 and ensure that exhaust temperatures fall within manufacturer specifications. Similarly, you will want to make sure that operating temperatures fall within the kW rating.

Your monthly inspection should also confirm that the oil pressure, coolant pressure, and other systems are stable and that the unit is operating smoothly and efficiently.

As with weekly testing, you must maintain accurate documentation of this data. Failure to maintain documentation that confirms the generator meets testing standards can result in fines and easily avoided penalties.

The 3-Year Test for Emergency Power Supply Systems (EPSS)

If you operate a Level 1 EPSS, you must perform a 3-year test in accordance with NFPA 110. These tests are considerably more detailed, and you will want to schedule a full day to complete them. This gives you enough time to complete the test and record the results.
